About Us

We are David and Zoë, a father and daughter team of professional photographers with our own studio based in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.

We are often asked where our business name, "Photo-Electric" came from.  Well it was changed in 2009 from "The Photo-Electric Effect".  So where did that name come from?

David, was originally a electronic engineer. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Newcastle University and worked as a design engineer and manager for over 30 years.  Hence the "Electric" part.  He was also a keen amateur photographer with a home darkroom for over 20 years.  Hence the "Photo" part.

As an electronic engineer, and a keen photographer, David designed a very sophisticated dark room light meter (for the technically minded, you set the paper speed, the contrast ratio and the exposure time and it gave you the grey value from 1 to 10). The sensor used a photodiode, which gives off electrons as light falls upon it.  This is phenomenon is known as "the Photo-Electric Effect"   He considered marketing the device, but it really belonged to the era of film, and digital photography was taking over.

David was made redundant in 2001, and decided a change of path and self dependency were needed. So using the knowledge he had gathered whilst gaining an MBA from Heriot Watt University, and his photographic expertise, and his software skills, David set up a photographic business. The name "the Photo-Electric Effect" just seemed to fit nicely.

Zoë joined the business in 2008. She has a BA(Hons) from Edinburgh College of Art and specialised in photography.  Prior to joining the business, Zoë was very active shooting bands and gigs around Edinburgh and was the resident photographer at the  "The Venue" in Edinburgh (now closed down). This reinforced the "Photo" part.

The name seems to be quite memorable, but quite a number of the hits to our website are from physicists or students looking for technical information.  If you happen to be one of them, here is a good place to continue looking.
